Juniper Plant

Naming Juniper

Juniper is a local variant of cedar trees and is most commonly grown as a bush here in East Tennessee. Both Thomas and Susanna have local family properties that have cedar and junipers growing on them and have had a love for this plant for a long time. The biblical meaning behind juniper comes from several different scriptures. 1 Kings 19 talks about Elijah seeking refuge under a Juniper bush and how the lord met him there and restored his physical health. Junipers are also listed in several other areas of the Old Testament of how a juniper bush survives out of harsh baren desert to bring life and refuge to those who seek it. Junipers are seen as a symbol of hope and faith given that they can survive both desert climate and through stout winters. Junipers are also seen medicinally as a purification or cleansing agent both in aromatherapy and ability to distil down into an alcohol. The smell of juniper transfers you to somewhere clear and clean and has the potential to help push through negative dark places into restorative healing.
